Diese Worte des berühmten Jazzmusikers Duke Ellington über Louis Armstrong sagen mehr über dessen Bedeutung in der Musik als viele gescheite Bücher.
Louis Armstrong, auch "Satchmo" genannt, wurde im Jahr 1900 in New Orleans/USA geboren. In den Vergnügungsvierteln der Schwarzen dieser hektischen Hafenstadt am Ufer des Mississippi verschmolzen zu jener Zeit der Blues, die Arbeitsgesänge der schwarzen Sklaven und ihr musikalisches Erbe aus Afrika zum ersten originalen Jazz: zum sogenannten New Orleans-Stil.
In dieser Zeit wuchs Louis Armstrong auf. Von seinen Eltern in eine Besserungsanstalt gesteckt, lernte er dort Kornett spielen, wechselte zur Posaune, bis er schließlich bei der Trompete blieb. 1914 entlassen, verdiente er sein Geld als Kohlenträger und beim Ausladen von Bananendampfern. Mit 18 Jahren spielte er schon so gut Trompete, dass er seinen Lehrer, den bekannten King Oliver, bei Auftritten vertreten konnte. Er spielte auf Mississippi-Dampfern, bis er schließlich 1922 New Orleans verließ, um King Oliver's Angebot wahrzunehmen, in dessen Band in Chicago zu spielen.
Hier begann Louis 'Satchmo Dippermouth' auch in Studios mit zwei Formationen zu arbeiten, deren Stil maßgebend für die Entwicklung des Jazz wurden. Diese Gruppen nannten sich "Hot Five" und "Hot Seven". Bevor Armstrong 1952 erstmals nach Europa kam, konnte er bereits auf bedeutende Erfolge in seiner Heimat zurückblicken: Er musizierte mit fast allen berühmten Jazzern zusammen, spielte mit seiner Band "Louis Armstrong All Stars" in vielen Ländern der Welt, machte viele Platten und spielte in einigen Filmen mit.
Über Jahrzehnte blieb er mit den verschiedensten Besetzungen der 'King of Jazz'. Sein 'Breitenerfolg' war vor allem darauf zurückzuführen, dass er es meisterhaft verstand, aktuelle Titel in seinem ureigensten Stil zu interpretieren.
"Satchmo" hat in seinen letzten Jahren auch viel gesungen, als er aus gesundheitlichen Gründen fast nicht mehr auf seinem Instrument blasen konnte. Seine raue und gefühlvolle Stimme ist vielen Musikfreunden z.B. durch seinen Hit "What A Wonderful World" bekannt (übrigens gehört diese Aufnahme vom 26. Mai 1970 zu den letzten, die "Satchmo" aufnahm).
Louis Armstrong machte keinen Unterschied zwischen Unterhaltungsmusik und "richtigem" Jazz. 1964 gelang es ihm, mit seiner Version von "Hello, Dolly" sogar die Beatles für mehrere Wochen von Platz 1 der Hitparaden zu verdrängen! Sein Showtalent machte seine Konzerte unterhaltsam. In einer Fernsehsendung zu seinem 70. Geburtstag sagte er: "Manche Kritiker sagen, ich sei ein Clown. Aber ein Clown, das ist etwas Großes. Es ist Glück, Leute glücklich zu machen. Du musst lieben, um spielen zu können." Jede seiner gespielten und gesungenen Noten gibt Zeugnis davon. Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong starb am 6. Juli 1971.
