Ich kenne das Original nicht. Den Song hörte ich bloss, weil ich sah, dass er seit einiger Zeit stetig steigt in den britischen iTunes-Charts. "Schöner Track", dachte ich, "4* könnte ich geben".

Dann sah ich plötzlich was von "Audition Britain's Got Talent" und da ich ziemlich begeistert von solchen Auditions bin, dachte ich, ich höre es mir mal an.

Als Calum anfing zu singen, war ich plötzlich weg, in einer ganz anderen Welt, ich musste ihm zuhören, konnte nicht wegschauen, obwohl der Song noch ziemlich lahm war aber plötzlich schlug sie ein, diese tolle, neue Stimme. Die Gänsehaut war am ganzen Körper und tränen flossen sofort. Sowas habe ich noch nie erlebt!

Wie könnte ich nun also anders, als diesem Herrn mit diesem grossen Song nicht die Höchstnote zu vergeben?

Übrigens, Live definitiv noch bombastischer als in der Studio-Version.

The guy's got an okay version, but I'm always a bit miffed when a subpar cover outpeaks an outstanding original. Both this and Jonas Blue's "Fast Car" have done that this year. Enough for me.

Mooie balladversie van een vrij middelmatig en hysterisch dansnummer.

Eine wunderschön gesungene Piano Interpretation dieser Nummer! Calum hat eine wundervoll, warme Stimme die mir zusagt. Auch der Tiesto Remix vermag zu überzeugen!

Vergeleken met het magische origineel komt dit toch een beetje rauw op m'n dak. Die jongen kan best zingen maar van dit nummer blijf je gewoon af.

Edit: Vooruit, een verhoging. Dit nummer blijft onverwoestbaar mooi, ook in de versie van Scott. Jammer van die Tiësto remix.

▒ Van een zwak "Robyn" origineel uit mei 2010 een prachtige plaat te maken is gewoon grandioos, juni 2016 !!! Deze nu inmiddels 27 jarige Britse zanger en gitarist uit Hull: "Calum Scott", was daar eind juli 2016 een zeldzame voorbeeld van !!! Vooruit: 5 sterren ☺!!!

This is probably more my style of music than the original, but his voice, well it's not that it's necessarily bad, he just seems to be straining way too hard and it's sounding forced. Or maybe his voice is kinda bad.

Pointlessly overpowering the vocals ≠ more interesting song. In fact it gives greater rise to the fact that the rest of the track makes such little impact that it's basically a glorified The Voice performance without the squealing crowd. Certainly not awful but not worth one's time. 2.25

I think everyone listening to the Robyn original knew that it was a sad song hidden behind a good dance beat and that's one of the reasons I loved that song when it came out. This is much more basic and showcases the lyrics more, but we've heard it all before so I don't think it was necessary. Also the voice is not so good.

Nah this sucks.

Such a great song, sung with great feeling and emotion. Never heard the original until I heard this version and I have to say I prefer this version over Robyn's.

Der Tiesto Remix ist gelungen. Daher eine 4 von mir.

Sehr schwerfällige Version des wirklich wunderbaren Robyn-Songs. Gibt mir nichts und wäre von mir sofort wieder vergessen worden, hätte ich die Nummer erstmals so gehört. Meines Erachtens unnötig.

The original Calum Scott version is meh and adds nothing to the song.

The Tiesto remix is amazing and gives it the edge that it needs.

Ik ben niet al te bekend met het origineel van Robyn, maar ik hoor best dat deze jongen kan zingen. Gevoelige en sfeervolle cover die mij persoonlijk wel kan bekoren.

Durchaus gelungene Version.

I'm sort of into it but I don't want to hear it every 5 minutes... would of liked it to go to #1 (it was better than Closer).

Ideally this should serve as a wake up call, but it won't. Trends don't truly go away until they overexpose themselves to the point that everyone recognises them, but this is one that not only crops up just on occasion, but one that inherently relies on the very same obfuscation to keep it going.

It's just a shame that it's rooted in such systemic bigotry because this is something that we should not have to see ever. I'm sure you know the drill, Britain's Got Talent finalist covers a song by Robyn, removes the pop and dance elements and turns it into a SERIOUS BALLAD. Public laps it up because it fills in that SERIOUS BALLAD market who are disillusioned by a market of Chainsmokers & Calvin Harris.

The underlying problem is that ironically, it's devoid of substance, or at the very least, goes some ways to remove some of it from the original recording. When Robyn sings "Dancing On My Own", she draws strength from the context of the record. It's a euphoric dance, she's not in the mood, because she can see her ex with another woman, well and truly moved on from her. Dancing is her tension release. It's one of the saddest pop songs of the decade.

This version relies on artiface and expectations based on associations. Because the general public will have a built in perception that pop music, particularly modern pop music and especially dance music is frivolous and disposable. We're built up to believe that music performed on organic instrumentation, is inherently music of class & substance. There's also another underlying problem that either through social expectations or hubris, women are far more likely to give out kudos to music performed by men than vice versa, something not helped by decades upon decades of canonisation.

The bottom line is that every time this happens, where a pop song is stripped back for a cover, there will be armies of people who insist that the cover is objectively better or more emotional than the original, even though it's literally the same song, with literally less substance because there's more removed than there is added.

There has been no shortage of offensive covers in the charts of late, but this is the most offensive because of what it stands for. No one's hailing Jonas Blue's version of "Fast Car" as a masterpiece, it's just that frivolous, disposable fun, while the original is already too canonised to be shaken by this. But this version threatens to overwrite the original. This is the version of "Dancing On My Own" that will get played on radio for decades to come. You'll never be able to discuss the original version of the song without having to call back to this. I'm going to download Robyn's version and never listen to this again.

Awfully bland and cliche rubbish. I hate this with a passion and his voice sucks because he sounds constipated the whole time.

Absolutely terrible cover. The song tries to show the emotion, but if anything there's nothing. His voice grates on me too, one of the worst for the year.

Everything has been said about this disgraceful cover so I won't repeat anybody. The most infuriating aspect of it is that, with this song becoming a big hit, there seems to be a high demand for this stripped back approach so I'm sure we can expect more in the future.

nettes cover-liedchen, nett vorgetragen. kommt jedoch natürlich niemals an das original von der grossartigen und wunderbaren robyn heran ;-)

Hm, da ich das Original überhaupt nicht kenne, kann ich vorurteilsfrei an den Song herangehen. Schöne Pianoballade, genau wie ich sie mag, eindrücklich vorgetragen. Gute 5.

When I first noticed the existence of this, I assumed it was a trop house cover. Now I wish it was because not even the worst trop house dreck is as bad as this piece of shit. When will people get that acoustic/stripped back covers (or acoustic/stripped back songs in general) does not = automatically good!!! This is exhibit A of how not to cover a song, it does no justice to the original. His voice is terrible and I echo what has already been said about this by others. Tiësto's version is a waste of time also, only barely more tolerable.

Es ist zwar auch mal schön einen gefühlvollen Song zu machen aber hier ist mir zu viel Gejaule dabei und da wird für mich die Musik etwas unglaubwürdig.

great but not better than the original

Langweilige und sich sehr lang hinziehende Nummer ohne Ecken und Kanten, trotz aller Banalität aber tatsächlich noch recht sperrig anzuhören. Mir gefällt dieses Werk nur bedingt; das hört sich vielleicht die tauberfränkische Hausfrau morgens um 7.45 Uhr auf Radio Ton oder SWR 3 an, während sie zum Aldi rollt und sich an der Ampel über das alte Ehepaar im silbernen Mercedes C180 aus den Neunzigern ärgert, weil es nicht in die Hufe kommt.

Für mich ist das eine nette und schöne Pianomelodie, die ich gerne nebenbei mal höre. Etwa auf einem Niveau mit Robyn, wenngleich beide Versionen natürlich sehr unterschiedlich sind.

Obscurity didn't really help me find any positives here but at least he tried. Remixed or not, it's still horrid.
