Für mich nun sicher nicht gerade die zarteste Versuchung, seit es Mainstream-Pop gibt. Aber ich muss schon auch zugeben, dass dieser Song gut aufs Ohr produziert ist und sich im Airplay gut machen würde. Kann durchaus ein Hit werden.

"Stitches" war ja ein sehr grosser Überraschungshit. Auch ich mochte es stets sehr wenn es im Radio lief, aber trotzdem war es nie genug, als das es auch mich einen grossen Einfluss hatte. "Treat You Better" ist natürlich nichts Neues, aber ist definitiv ein weiterer guter Pop-Track, der es wohl auch gut in die Charts schaffen sollte, wo es dann auch deutlich schlechteres geben würde. 4+*

edit: Rauf auf die 5*. Zurecht ein solcher Hit. Hätte nicht gedacht, dass er nochmals einen grossen Hit landen würde...

Shawn Mendes komt binnenkort met zijn tweede officiële album en dat is altijd een moeilijk album om mee op te proppen te komen. 'Treat You Better' is een heerlijk voorproefje, en het is te merken dat Shawn er werk van heeft gemaakt. Het klinkt anders, alternatief, helemaal op z'n plek in het huidige muzieklandschap, maar toch op en top Shawn. Mag een kneiter van een hit gaan worden, want dat verdient hij!

Looks like I'm still not a fan. Only a couple of notes away in the main hook from sounding exactly like "Stitches", but at least the production is somewhat neater, making for a better listen. 2.75

At the moment I liked Stitches better the first go around, but in time I expect this marginally different version to grow on me.

De bakvisjes zullen er van smullen maar ik hoor het niet zo. Mendes' stem schiet als een echte puber alle kanten op. Vooral als hij zijn 'zware' stem opzet klinkt het helemaal nergens naar. Zijn hoge kant gaat meer richting Justin Timberlake en dat ligt ook direct prettiger in het gehoor. Al met al een aardig nummer maar niet meer dan dat.

It's a decent track but I definitely agree with the similarities between this and Stitches. I really liked Stitches a lot, but it outstayed it's welcome. Also the 'better than he can' does not sound so good. A shame that they went for something so same sounding...

Ist schon okay und tut niemandem weh. Ist aber auch nichts besonderes.

Es klingt in meinen Ohren einfach zu kalkuliert und leider zugeschnitten aufs Formatradio. 3-4 abgerundet.

Und wieder hat der Jungstar einen formidablen Ohrwurm kreiert.

01.11.16: Nach Hören des Albums (das heißt auch dem mehrmaligen Hörens dieses Songs) wird klar: Das ist ein genialer Ohrwurm. 5 => 6.

I'm not especially fond of the lack of evolving, and it doesn't really help that the production is a little bit overdone. It sounds really uncomfortable in the chorus because Shawn's voice doesn't really mesh together with it, like the volumes don't match up or something. While I'm at it, it does also feel like it's trying a bit too hard to find a hook and it just doesn't click with me in the same way "Stitches" did.

But that's not the problem. The problem is of course the lyrics. From my perspective, he doesn't paint a very flattering image for himself here, and so any potential saving grace has either been left on the cutting room floor, or I'm just supposed to assume isn't there. See there's this girl, let's call her Toriel, and there's this boy, let's call him Asgore. Toriel and Asgore are going out with each other. Toriel tells Shawn that she is happy, but he believes this is not the case, he implores that she give up Asgore and instead go out with him, as he is in fact better for her.

There are a few ways you can save this. For instance, provide an example of some sort of reasonable insider info that Shawn can dig up. Perhaps Asgore is cheating on Toriel for another girl, Undyne? Perhaps he heard Asgore talking to his friend Papyrus that he is in fact just stringing Toriel along. I just need something to go off of, because otherwise it's just Shawn's word against Toriel's, and that's something we generally file under mansplaining.

Then there's the opposite approach, Shawn could at least explain why he is in fact the more suitable suitor. All we get from it is that he 'won't let [her] down' and that he is a self-described 'gentleman', the former feeling like a platitude at best, and the latter descending this into fedora-core.

My third suggestion isn't much of an exclusion, rather a re-writing. I can't quite get behind the whole sentiment that Shawn is looking out for Toriel when he immediately suggests that he himself is the replacement. It's just all a little too convenient isn't it? The whole of the song leaves me feeling that he doesn't want her to be better, he just wants her.

Look at it this way: You know the film "There's Something About Mary"? In this song, Shawn Mendes is figuratively Tucker/Norm. So what I'm saying is that Toriel should just go out with Brett Favre, even if the Packers suck. I hope his next single is back on track because I feel a little betrayed here.

Hier greife ich auch mal zur Vokabel "formatradiotauglich".

Still don't like his voice but I prefer this over Stitches simply due to this not being as overplayed. A weak 3.

Gefällt mir sehr gut. Besonders der Anfang mit diesem Gezupfe an der Gitarre, irgendwie ist man sofort aufmerksam. Dazu hat der Track ein angenehmes Tempo und wird von Shawn gut gesungen. Gute 5* liegen allemal drin.

Hört man im Radio, ja. Muss deshalb nicht schlecht sein.

Er wurde als Justin Bieber Derivat ähnlich wie AUSTIN MAHONE und einige andere aufgezogen. Hat nichts zu bedeuten. Auch JUSTIN TIMbERLAKE war einst in einer Boygroup

Kein schlechter Song, in etwa auf dem Niveau von "Stitches". Unauffällige Radio-Mucke halt, aber chartstechnisch dennoch leicht überbewertet. Passabel, gute 4.

Unerträglich mittelmäßig, wie so vieles aktuell in der Musikwelt.

Der Refrain ist schon ziemlich gut, trotzdem klingt das für mich irgendwie wie ein bisschen nach einem "Stitches" Vol.2!

Groovt ganz nett vor sich hin. Die Stimme von Shawn Mendes klingt auch ganz anheimelnd. Aber insgesamt ist der Song nichts Besonderes.

Well I liked this more than "Stitches" at first because the production sounded nicer than on that track, while it also was catchier for me. It's only gotten worse especially since it's become a big hit like "Stitches". I hate how it sounds like it's trying to emulate "Stitches". Obvious mention about what an asshole he sounds like in this song. Dude just go find someone else, get over the fact you're not with her and stop whining. Cringe video too, you look stupid trying to be some tough guy. Is the whole point of the video to prove what a masculine real man he is to this girl? If so then fuck you, fuck you Shawn Mendes. The world needs less of that toxic hyper-masculinity.

I can only agree with most people on this; the production here is decent, I could see myself enjoying this, but dear god that voice, it's atrocious.
Yes the lyrics are bad, but I can always turn my English language switch off and pretend it's some gibberish like I'd done before, but I can't escape that bratty, whiny voice. Him shouting "Better than he can" is one of my least favorite moments in a pop song this year.

In retrospect I disliked this track and like others found it so over hyped and loved by commercial radio/TV. But since his latest material dropped i've become to enjoy his music including this.

Musikalisch sowie gesanglich armselige Nummer.

Shawn Mendes heeft nummers die ik afkan, maar met dit nummertje - en vooral dan hoe hij op basis van de tekst overkomt - doet het toch niet.

Mit dem Song hab ich damals Shawn Mendes das erste mal wahrgenommen. fand ich damals eher nervig aber heute, mehr als 5 Jahre später finde ich den Song garnicht schlecht. Ist bei weitem nicht sein bester song aber selbst seine nicht so guten Songs sind generell immernoch gut hörbar

Durchschnittliches Radio-Futter. Dazu völlig totgespielt...

Eingängig und wundervoll. Den Erfolg hat der Song sich definitiv verdient. Sein bester Song.
